I ate here on 7 August 2026 and photographed the whole ticket machine. Every price below is what it was charging that day.

Yes, and it is the first place I send anyone who is nervous about ordering in Japan. The ticket machine has an ENGLISH button — most in Tokyo don't. The house dish is ¥980, arrives in about four minutes, and comes with a raw egg you are meant to mix in. I run anime tours three minutes from this door.

Shōwa Shokudō, three minutes from the Electric Town exit

What is Shōwa Shokudō?

A working-class teishoku diner — the kind of place office workers eat lunch at, not a tourist restaurant. "Shōwa" refers to the 1926–1989 era, and the name promises plain, filling, unfashionable food. It opens at 7am and runs to 11pm, which almost nothing else around here does.

Does the menu have English?

Yes, and this is the real reason to come. The ticket machine has three buttons across the top — ENGLISH, 中文, 한국어 — and pressing one redraws the entire menu in that language with the same photographs.

Most ticket machines in Tokyo are Japanese-only, which is exactly why visitors avoid the shops that use them and end up eating convenience-store food instead. This one removes the problem entirely.

How much does it cost?

¥920 for plain curry rice, ¥980 for the house Stamina Don, and ¥1,180–¥1,480 for the set meals. I photographed the machine on 7 August 2026, so this is a real snapshot rather than a scraped price list from an old blog.

Dish Price
Stamina Don (house speciality) ¥980
Pork kimchi don ¥980
Curry rice ¥920
Karaage set meal ¥1,180
Jan-jan yaki set meal ¥1,180
Pork kimchi set meal ¥1,180
Stamina-and-curry combination ¥1,220
Chicken katsu curry ¥1,220
Ginger pork set meal ¥1,320
Beef hormone stir-fry set meal ¥1,320
Makanai don ¥1,380
Yakiniku set meal ¥1,380
Chicken katsu curry (aigake) ¥1,420
Jan-jan yaki, double meat ¥1,480

Sides and drinks: raw egg ¥100, extra rice ¥320 (large ¥420), kimchi ¥280, cabbage salad ¥280, karaage ¥480, pork miso soup ¥380, Coca-Cola ¥320, highball ¥420, Sapporo lager ¥580.

What should you order the first time?

The Stamina Don, ¥980. Thin slices of pork in a sweet-savoury house sauce over rice, spring onion on top, miso soup and pickles included. It is what the sign outside advertises and what most people at the counter are eating.

Under a thousand yen, on the table in about four minutes. If you want more food rather than a different dish, the set meals at ¥1,180–¥1,480 come with rice, soup and pickles on separate plates.

What is the raw egg for?

Crack it over the bowl and mix it through. The heat of the pork turns it into a sauce that coats every slice — that is the intended way to eat this dish, not a garnish you can ignore. Leaving it in its little bowl is the most common visitor mistake here.

Japanese eggs are produced and graded to be eaten raw, and dishes like this are built around that. If it still makes you uneasy, ask staff to leave it off; nobody will mind.

What are the jars on the counter?

Free seasonings, and you are expected to use them halfway through rather than at the start. The tray holds the shop's own sauce, grated garlic, chilli, lemon and pickled ginger.

Eat a third of the bowl plain, then change the flavour. That is how the regulars work through it, and it is the difference between "a pork rice bowl" and "a pork rice bowl I remember."

The condiment tray: house sauce, garlic, chilli, lemon, pickled ginger — all free

What's the catch?

There is no vegetarian or vegan option at all. Every main is pork, beef or chicken, and the curry roux is meat-based. If that matters, CoCo Ichibanya a few minutes away has a fully plant-based curry and this place has nothing for you.

Beyond that: seating is tight, it is loud, and people finish and leave in about fifteen minutes — this is not somewhere to sit and work. Bring cash. The shop's listing says cash only, and I did not photograph the machine's payment slots closely enough to confirm whether it now takes IC cards, so assume notes and coins.

Can you take food away?

Yes, almost the entire menu. The sign by the door says so in English, and two excluded dishes are marked on a small notice above the machine.

This matters more than it sounds. If you are carrying luggage, or would rather eat outside than at a counter, takeaway turns a cramped diner into a workable option.

When should you go?

Open 07:00–23:00, daily. The 7am opening is the useful part — this is one of very few places near Akihabara station serving a real hot meal before the shops open at 10 or 11.

If you are jet-lagged and awake at six, this is where to go. Lunchtime, roughly 12:00–13:30, is when the counter fills with local office workers; late evening is quieter.

Where exactly is it?

1-15-11 Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku, Akihabara Nishikawa Building 1F — about three minutes from JR Akihabara's Electric Town exit. Look for the red sign reading 名物スタミナ丼 above a corrugated metal frontage.

The upper floors of the building house a radio-equipment company, which is about as Akihabara an address as it gets.

How does it compare to Go!Go!Curry?

Different jobs. Go!Go!Curry is one regional dish done one way — Kanazawa curry, dark and heavy, counter seating, cash only. Shōwa Shokudō is a broad diner menu with a multilingual machine that opens at 7am.

If you want the regional speciality, go there. If you want breakfast, or you are travelling with someone who reads no Japanese at all, come here. They are four minutes apart, so this is not a decision you need to agonise over.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to speak Japanese to eat at Shōwa Shokudō? No. Press ENGLISH on the ticket machine, pick a photograph, pay, and hand the printed ticket to staff. No conversation is required at any point.

Is the raw egg safe to eat? Yes. Japanese eggs are produced and graded for raw consumption, and this dish is designed around it. Ask staff to leave it off if you would rather not.

Is there anything for vegetarians at Shōwa Shokudō? No. Every main contains meat and the curry roux is meat-based. CoCo Ichibanya nearby has a fully plant-based curry.

Can I get breakfast in Akihabara? Yes — Shōwa Shokudō opens at 07:00, which is unusual for this area. Most Akihabara shops do not open until 10:00 or 11:00.

How much does lunch cost at Shōwa Shokudō? Between ¥920 and ¥1,480. The house Stamina Don is ¥980 including miso soup and pickles.

Can we eat here on an Akihabara tour? Yes. It is fast, cheap and three minutes from where tours start, and the multilingual machine means nobody in the group gets stuck. Tell me in advance if anyone is vegetarian and I will pick somewhere else.

Sources and honesty note

Prices, dish names and the multilingual buttons are transcribed from photographs I took inside the shop on 7 August 2026. The address, opening hours and no-closing-day claim come from the shop's restaurant-directory listing, not an official site — I could not find one. I have not confirmed whether the ticket machine accepts IC cards or credit cards, so this article says to bring cash rather than guessing.

No affiliate links. I eat here because it is three minutes from where my tours start.
